Dear Colleague,
Yes, the ABPN’s new Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirements for psychiatrists are extensive. And whether you just received initial certification in 2012, or you’ve been certified for years, you need to start meeting these new requirements immediately.
Fortunately, the 100% MOC Solution gives you all the resources you need to meet these requirements in one place – and with a minimum of time, hassle, and effort. Read below to get a better understanding of what your requirements are, and how you can meet them easily and efficiently.
There are three main parts of the MOC process that psychiatrists must address:
For most psychiatrists, the CME credit requirements are self-explanatory. Many doctors, however, are less familiar with Self-Assessment (SA) credits. SA credits are earned from CME activities specially approved by the ABPN. These activities include a Self-Assessment pre-activity examination. These examinations show you how your peers performed on each question, and provide explanations and further resources for reading as well. SA activities can be thought of as a special, higher type of CME, so you still earn traditional Category 1 CME by participating in SA activities.
Meet Your Annual CME & SA Requirements – In Zero Extra Time.

CMEtoGO is an audio lecture series, available on CD and MP3, that allows you to meet all your annual ABPN CME and Self-Assessment requirements while taking zero extra time out of your life. Because you can listen to lectures during your commute in the car, you do double duty, turning those wasted minutes sitting in traffic into constructive learning.
Catch Up on SA & CME Credits if You’re Behind!
Even though CMEtoGO covers all your annual CME and Self-Assessment requirements – that may not be enough. Because of the rapid expansion of SA requirements with little warning, many psychiatrists need to play catch up. Choose as many ABPN-approved Online Courses for Self-Assessment as you need, then get caught up at your convenience while watching online lectures covering practical, engaging topics.

PIP is a continual process of documenting current patient cases, comparing current treatment approaches with best practices, and soliciting feedback on clinical performance. To do this you go through three steps – assessing, improving, and re-measuring performance.
Each PIP Unit consists of a Feedback Module and a Clinical Module. In Feedback, doctors survey patients and peers, compare the results with best practices, and create a performance improvement plan. Doctors must also re-measure to determine if improvements have been made. In the Clinical Review Module, doctors review patient charts, compare the data with best practices, and create a performance improvement plan. Another chart review is conducted to determine if improvements have been made.
Complete PIP Units with a Minimum of Hassle
Introducing simplePIP, an ABPN-approved PIP activity series that provides you with everything you need to meet your PIP requirements. This activity has all the tools you need to collect data, compare results with best practices, and re-assess for improvements. And simplePIP walks you through the activity in step-by-step detail, turning what can be a source of anxiety and confusion into a clear and simple process.
Cognitive or recertification examinations have been in the MOC process since 1994. Psychiatrists are required to sit for this examination within 10 years of their previous certification or MOC date; passing this exam extends their Certification another 10 years.

The phase-in schedule for the required CME, SA, and PIP credit is tied directly to the year psychiatrists were initially certified or last recertified.
Psychiatrists certified or recertified in 2012 must meet these requirements by collecting credits in increments. Within each 3-year period, certificate-holders must earn at least 90 CME, 24 SA, and complete 1 PIP Unit. This ensures lifelong learning is accomplished at regular intervals – and not in a rush at the end of the 10-year cycle.
However, psychiatrists certified or recertified prior to 2012 can complete their CME, SA and PIP requirements on an accelerated schedule. This allows psychiatrists to “catch up” on requirements if they are behind. The chart below details the phase-in schedule of MOC requirements, based on the most recent date of certification or recertification.
